Maintenance & Operations (M & O) Audit

In response to declining educational resources, SFP&M and SSA have joined forces to develop a procedure for auditing the M & O of public school districts.  The process is designed to identify savings that can be achieved through organizational and behavioral changes, rather than by capital investment in modernization or system upgrades.

Although M & O represents only a small part of the budget, it’s one of the few areas where discretion can be exercised by the district.  The typical first response to declining resources is to make deep cuts in M & O, because it is perceived as being “the farthest from the classroom.”  However, this is not altogether true.  In fact, M & O is the classroom;  cuts that result in deterioration of the learning environment will have an effect on the health, well-being and performance of teachers and students.

The M & O Audit will focus on the following:

  • Job descriptions
  • Job schedules
  • Supervision
  • Work order procedures
  • Purchasing procedures
  • Inventory Control
  • Budgeting

A written report of our findings will be provided to the district, with emphasis on changes that can bring about immediate dollar savings and increased productivity, for no capital investment.
